Every summer, mosquitoes come out from hibernation to annoy us, or so it feels.  According to the Center for Disease Control and Protection (CDC), mosquitoes kill more people worldwide than any other living creature. The reason behind this is because mosquitoes can carry diseases like the Zika virus, West Nile virus, and Yellow Fever, putting a damper on a Summer full of adventures and fun in the great outdoors.

In order to avoid mosquitoes and any other insects during the summer many of us tend to use insect repellents that affect an insect’s senses like smell and taste to prevent it from fining a human host. But, if chemical pesticides that leave an unpleasant odor are not your thing, you might want to consider adding plants that naturally repel mosquitoes to your garden.

Plants that repel mosquitoes do so through their oils and natural essence. Depending on the plant species, they can be crushed, dried, or infused into an oil or alcohol to use in living spaces, clothing, or applied to the skin.
Note that placing these plants in areas with constant foot traffic can help deter mosquitoes from a path but will not protect an individual.

Here are 6 plants that repel mosquitoes:

1. Basil

Many of us are familiar with this herb as it can double as a culinary herb and as a natural repellent. The compounds in the basil leaves confuse and irritate mosquitoes, forcing them to leave to recover their senses. Not all basil plants are the same, so do some research to find the right type for your garden.

2. Catnip

Easy to grow and highly ornamental. You can find catnip almost anywhere in the U.S. According to research done by Iowa State University, catnip is ten times more effective than DEET, a common chemical found in most insect repellant sprays.

3. Citronella Grass

The most common plant people use to repel mosquitoes.  Citronella is known for its distinct smell and is the most common natural ingredient used in insect repellant sprays. In a dose by dose comparison, citronella is initially as effective as DEET.

4. Lavender

With a pungent smell that mosquitoes do not like, lavender also deters other small insects from your garden or backyard. Although the plant is an excellent aid in repelling mosquitoes, its essential oil form is the most effective fighting off those pesky insects.

5. Marigolds

Marigolds have a unique smell that deters mosquitoes. They are also commonly used as ornamental garden borders that can dissuade aphids, thrips, whiteflies, squash bugs, and tomato hornworms.

6. Mint

A great option to keep mosquitoes, wasps, and ants far from you and your garden. The stronger the aroma, the more effective it is at deterring these pests. There are more varieties of mint than most think, so explore your options and find out which is the most convenient for you.
